If you’ve received one of our veg boxes recently, you’ll have noticed we pack some items in biodegradable bags. We’ve had a few questions about how to dispose of them properly, so we wanted to share some guidance—and explain why we’re using these bags in the first place.
Our veg bags meet the BSI PAS 9017:2020 standard for biodegradability. This means they’re designed to break down safely and without leaving microplastics behind, unlike conventional plastic bags.
According to the latest advice from Oxfordshire County Council and Buckinghamshire County Council, these bags should go into your general waste (black bin).
Please don’t put them in your food waste or recycling bins. Unfortunately, biodegradable plastics aren’t yet accepted through those systems—but we’re hopeful this will change in the future.
Our number one priority is getting your veg to you as fresh, vibrant, and tasty as possible. These bags play a big part in helping us do that.
That all adds up to less food waste and better value for you. It also means the organic vegetables we work hard to grow have the best chance of ending up on your plate, not in the bin.
We know there’s no perfect packaging solution yet—but these bags are a step in the right direction. We’ve had lots of positive feedback so far, and we’re always keeping an eye out for even better materials as new options become available.
Thanks for being part of the journey—and for supporting small-scale, sustainable farming.
With thanks,
The Sandy Lane Farm Team
